Our Family

A. W. Phillips and Sons Landscaping, a small company serving Oakland, CA and its surrounding communities. We specialize in designing and installing residential landscape and irrigation systems with an eye on drought tolerance, low maintenance and year-round color and interest.

History

The company was formed in 1976, during the first recent drought. In the beginning, the emphasis of the business was maintenance. Over the years, the installation of landscapes became the major thrust of the company. Designing landscapes has taken the place of maintenance as we no longer maintain landscapes, but still prefer to work with residential properties leaving commercial work to others.

Over the years, the whole family has been involved in the business. Both sons helped early on as a way to make spending money. Later on their involvement increased as their need for funds increased, especially for things like college. Both sons have left, only to return to work in the business. Currently the older son, Josh, works with his dad. His needs revolve around his first born, a recent arrival, Hazel. The younger son, a recent graduate of Sonoma State, is trying to find his niche in the world.
